This is a matter of opinion, but I noticed vastly better performance with 64-bit Linux. It is not necessary. The x86-64 arch will fall back to 32-bit automatically and you'll never notice the difference. However if your processor supports 64-bit, I highly recommend it. You won't notice a huge improvement with boot times or running programs, but where you'll notice is when there's a large load on the processor. A good example is copying one drive to another. In Windows and Linux, it slows the system to a crawl and makes it almost useless. With 64-bit, you can tell the system is slower than usual but it can still be used and you can still get work done. I'm very glad that I switched. I still have a server running 32-bit with a 3 GHZ processor and it is definitely slower for some tasks, like fetching large amounts of email and system backups. Yes, Speakup works either way. David Sexton wrote: > Do I need to install a 64bit version of linux on my duocore computer? > If so, will speakup work?
