configuring asterisk:cheap phone?

Well, I've been interested in asterisk for a while.
Getting a pbx distro sounds cool, though. Only issues I've had is the 
install. If I can get to ssh I'm good, but I don't tend to be able to get 
distros installed by myself, which is rather irritating. :)
