Why not try the following: And this may be difficult, but if you can get to be root, see if there is a /var directory and then /var/log. Now, I am not sure what file to tell you to look in, but it might be called messages, or maybe syslog, but you will just have to poke. Now when you find the file with recent log messages, plug your cable in and see if there are any changes, also look in dmesg to see if anything happens.
