Speakup is quite specific to the Linux kernel. You may wish to try YASR instead. I understand Yasr even runs on a Mac, so it shouldn't be a problem on Open Solaris. I'm not sure that it currently works with speech-dispatcher, however. If Mike Gorse is still around, he would probably have that answer.
