using speakup in open solaris

Speakup is quite specific to the Linux kernel. You may wish to try YASR 
instead. I understand Yasr even runs on a Mac, so it shouldn't be a 
problem on Open Solaris. I'm not sure that it currently works with 
speech-dispatcher, however. If Mike Gorse is still around, he would 
probably have that answer. Mostly it uses Emacspeak servers, but there 
are native drivers for some speech systems, including Festival and some 
external synthesizers.
