 Are you sure it is a lockup, or can you hit printscreen and have it
 start talking again?

 I ask because this sounds like the full_time issue.  If you cat
 /sys/module/speakup/parameters/full_time and see a number less than
 40000, you will have this issue.

This default was fixed in speakup git, you might have to get the speakup
package from debian testing or unstable to get the latest fixes if you
are not using git.
