build speakup as modules with standard 2.6.26 kernel docs?

Where are documentation describing how to build speakup as modules for use
with a standard kernel?
The way I understood it, one should be able to do that from kernels 2.6.26
and up or were I dreaming?
I did a git-pull and just saw instructions on building the kernel like it
always was.
The docs there does state that it might be out of date though.
TIA, Willem
