How to get indexing to work?

I would like to use speech-dispatcher and possibly dectalk, or swift
voices, but I need indexing to work -- how would I get this done --
would I have to write a driver which I can do, but is there some kind
of documentation of what is needed to do so?  Do those two voices come
with what is necessary to write such a driver?
