Framebuffer Support Missing

I'm sure the initramfs is being used because when I added the spkout
module to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules, speech came quite a bit
earlier in the boot sequence. The only other thing I can possibly
guess is X had not been installed at that time. I am now in the
process of installing gnome (I chose the entire gnome desktop) and
perhaps more x stuff is needed to fully use framebuffers. I've been
anxious to get gnome/orca going anyway so am about to give up on
getting framebuffer support going in the plain text console
environment. Oh, the 'most' option is specified in the initrd config
file so you're right; framebuffers are supposed to be chosen but I see
no mention of fb or framebuffer in dmesg at all. So I really don't
have a clue.
