Steve, On Debian, the library packages often come in two parts, one part is sufficient to support precompiled applications, and the other part containing the necessary headers etc. needed to compile sources. Those second parts are often not automatically installed along with the first parts. They will end with "-dev" (for development). So type "aptcache search <library name>" and you will be shown all the various packages associated with a given library, then just install the missing "-dev" package, and your compiles will work fine.
