No, it is the other way around -- installing speechd-up installs
speakup.

I really do not want to do this, because I know there are people out
there using speechd-up, and it is also a good solution.

The main difference between them is that espeakup is more like the
ttsynth connector, and it is a light weight connector, mainly designed
for live cds, embedded systems, etc.

Once it is installed, add it to the default runlevel by typing.

rc-update add espeakup default

as root.

Once you make sure that the softsynth module is set up to load on boot,
you should be fine from there.
