setting up mail on lenny

Here is what I use. Maybe this will help.
getmail for retrieving the mail. Getmail filters through maildrop, which sends
the mail to the correct folders, if it's not classified as spam. Bogofilter works
as my spam filter, which maildrop calls, but only
for mail that doesn't go anywhere else, which avoids the problem of list traffic being classified as spam.
I have mutt set up, and it uses msmtp to send the mail. I haven't got multiple accounts set up with mutt yet,
but  msmtp supports multiple accounts and mutt supports macros, so you can use those to switch from account to account.
Based on your requirements, getmail, maildrop, msmtp and mutt should be able to do what you want.
Getmail has native support for delivering itself, so you can add in the filtering later to simplify things.
