Clone the repository somewhere other than inside the kernel tree (say your home directory, or /usr/src). For example, to put it in your home dir do this: cd git clone http://linux-speakup.org/speakup.git Once that is done, make sure that /usr/src/linux points to the kernel you want to install speakup into. Then, cd into the speakup directory that was created by the git clone command and as root run ./install. I use sudo for this, so I would do the following: cd ~/speakup sudo ./install Let me know if you have any questions.
