I'm not sure what you mean by, "by default". Once the kernel is patched, I'll just be writing an ebuild for it so that you can emerge speakup and get it installed. Then you would just modprobe the module for the synth you are using. It will be very similar to the way the alsa-driver package works if you use the drivers that are not in the kernel.
