Hi

Are they really related?  I thought that the bios is stored in a chip.  I
haven't lost any functionality by removing all partitions and putting a
number of different distributions on the eee PC.

If you wipe the partitions then the bios basic input/output system is gone 
until you put new partitions on that drive then it's back again.
