Yes, its certainly possible. You'll need the speech-dispatcher and speechd-up packages, which may be provided by your distro, depending what that is, although they're not too hard to compile from source. Configure speech-dispatcher to use your chosen synth, (espeak is probably the easiest and most responsive), and change the speakup synth to sftsyn.
