I can tell you that for some reason ubuntu (I'm now using the feisty live cd0 doesn't get my sblive soundcard settings right. Seems like it does unmute everything necessary but there's one surround setting that has to have the volume turned up for it to work. I end up having to just let everything boot up normally, then I switch to a console and start brltty, then I go into alsamixer and fix that setting.
