This is a bug in the current speakup code in cvs. When Gilles made changes he inserted a couple of new functions for reading and translating characters in video memory. He loses the attribute byte in the call to his get character function so speakup constantly thinks it is moving over a new background colour whenever the cursor moves left or right or backspace. I have hunted the problem down but haven't had a chance to fix it yet.
