Alsa-and-More Trebble, with Speakup?

The problem is that I do want microphone input, but I don't want to hear
the output.  Unfortunately, once I save the volume for microphone input
and then mute the microphone output to the speakers/headphones, I can't
seem to change the volume for input without somehow turning off
microphone input altogether with no way to get it back without totally
reconfiguring the card.
