Interesting. I run Slackware 10.2, but never had this problem. You could also just disable udev altogether. Actually, I seem to recall that udev was turned off by default in 10.2, apparently, because it was causing problems for some users. To check if it is on or off, see if /etc/rc.d/rc.udev has execute permission for root. If it does, it's on, otherwise, it's off.
