If you just wanted a syntax check, then just run proftpd with the -t flag, and it will tell you if there are any problems. As for your connection being reset problem, does this happen when you connect to 127.0.0.1, or when someone tries to connect to you from the outside world. If the latter is the case, then I seem to recall that you have cox cable, in which case they may be filtering in-bound port 20.
