It has been answered in another mail already. JFTR:

Boot using:

grml swspeak

This will prepare your system for use with software synthesizer
through speakup.  Then run 'speechd-up' after booting up to activate
sound output.

It's documented in http://grml.org/files/release-0.6/grml-cheatcodes.txt
in section "Accessibility related settings".
