Hello Charles: I am wondering if you are giving the speakup synthesizer parametre on the command line of the boot prompt? When you get to the boot prompt you usually type linux speakup_synth=bns. A lot of the other distributions use different names like knoppix or grml or whatever but you need to specify the synth on all of them because they are compiled to support all the speakup synths so you need to tell the kernel which one you want it to try. How you actually get to the boot prompt depends on the boot loader used and how it is configured. Many times it will stop at the boot prompt automatically but if not then you need to tap the shift key either one will do just after the computer beeps when booting until you get the boot prompt. good luck.
