The line I posted was an alias definition, not a command to execute. You 
might be able to make it work if you put just the stuff between the 
single quotes there. However, it will probably show you the IP address 
and then whisk it away before you notice it.

You would be better off putting the whole line in /etc/profile, and that 
way it defines the myip command for any and all users. I find it handy 
to have that command, even though my IP does not change, since it is a 
quick and reliable way to check if I have a live connection to the 
outside world.
