I all
I have managed to get the DECtalk PC firmware loaded using dosemu.
Speakup then works with the synth, however there is a fair bit of lag
between contents of the screen changing and the synth speaking. If I
push it too hard, the system totally locks up, and the DECtalk emits a
tiny bit of sound every second or so, as if it were trying to finish
speaking. I have to press the reset button on the machine.

This is on an smp machine, but I don't think it is speakup or the
system. I am using firmware version 4.2c, which was on the disk that
came with the card. I do intend to try a uniprocessor kernel, but don't
think that will make any difference.

Suggestions welcome.
