ltlk"timeout waiting for input"

I have a tripletalk at work and a doubletalk at home. I've been getting
a message when i initialize them that says "timeout waiting for input".
I believe I get 1 per second for 60 seconds and then the synthesizer
begins working.

Anybody know what causes this? At first I thought it was only with the
tripletalk. then I thought it was because I had a gettiy on the serial
port. I'm pretty sure it's none of those things. I've observed it on a
bunch of different machines some of which have the kernel from Shane at
debian and some have a kernel I compiled myself.

It's not a deal killer. Waiting 60 seconds for the screen reader to
start up is a pain. And it's a bit embarrassing if my boss is looking
over my shoulder. But my main problem is that I think whatever is wrong
is also causing emacspeak to not work with the external synthes.

I must have something misconfigured on all of these machines. They'd
have similar configurations because i've configured them all myself and
so I figure I'm consistently making the same mistake again and again.
