Trying to compile 2.6.10 with Speakup

Hi.
I am running Slackware 10.1 and have tried twice now to compile a 2.6.10
kernel with speakup2.0.
the installation file indicates that I should do make mrproper from the
/usr/src/linux-2.6.10 directory before running .install from
/usr/src/speakup-2.0.
when I do this, I see 3 out of 13 hunks fail, and I have no idea how to
debug any of that.
Need some help here.
thanks.
