changing ip address

I like to edit the files involved directly:

/etc/hosts
/etc/sysconfig/network
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth?

Then, do a 

service network restart
or perhaps something like:

ifup eth0

Note that you may need to configure params for wireless with iwconfig,
for instance:

iwconfig eth1 essid my_sid
