Hmmm. I have had flite on multiple machines -- though they were all
Thinkpads, come to think of it. <grin>

I have also not compiled Flite myself in some time, having just used the
rpms.

My current Thinkpad, an X31, will run software speech and play an audio
file at the same time (via dmix). So, I don't know what's different with
my setup over against yours. My audio hw is one of the Intel 8X0 variants.
