I'm also running slackware 10.1, and test-speech works fine with festival for me, but gnopernicus seems not to. When I am in run level 4, gdm beeps for me to login, and I do so. I then do alt+f2, and type in /usr/bin/gnopernicus, and hit enter, but get no speech. According to sighted help, gnome-control-panel is saying that a bunch of things are being terminated. I've also had a look at my $HOME/.xsession-errors, but can't make sense out of what that reports, other then it doesn't show anything obvious to me that would cause a problem. I had gnopernicus running just fine under slackware 9.1 on this system. So, if anybody does respond with answers to the original post in this thread, and is willing to help figure out where the problem is, I would really appreciate it if you could please cc me as well if replying off list.
