First of all, it doesn't matter at all what your friend was using, be it a web browser, or an ftp program, you'll download at the same speed with either. Second, you're making lots of assumptions here. Namely, at the time you might have tried this with him, there might have been a lot of internet traffic between you and him, which could certainly have a big enough impact on the speed, given a large enough amount of traffic between you and him. Also, have you taken into account your upload bandwidth, his download bandwidth, and a combination of both, assuming overhead as Thomas described before?
