Hi. Just a correction. You don't build software synths into the kernel. Software synths run in user space. To get a software synth working, you need to install the software synth, install speech-dispatcher, and finally build a program called speechd-up. Speechd-up takes the output from the speakup software synth driver and sends it to speech-dispatcher. Speech-dispatcher will send the text from speechd-up to the default synth selected in the config file for speech-dispatcher. Hope this helps.
