Marvin -- i think it is better to use a hardware synth for speakup, as then you can hear more of the boot process, before the sound card driver gets loaded. Building speakup with the software synth makes the kernel bigger and your system slower, as the synth has to be compiled into the kernel along with speakup. If you can get an old doubletalk or even a more expensive dectalk or whatever, then you could even use it on other systems if you need to. But you need a synth that is able to plug into a serial port, not USB. I think the USB output is not yet supported. Go to the speakup page and you will find links to all the various linux versions -- binaries and source -- and you will also find links to synths that work with speakup. Here are some links I saved in my favorites: http://www.linux-speakup.org/speakup.html http://linux-sound.org/speech.html http://www.linux-speakup.org/ftp/disks/fedora/index.html The last link is to the Fedora Core linux with speakup, which is the one I have chosen to use first. But you can find links to other linux distributions: Debian, slackware, etc. Good luck. --le ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marvin Hunkin" <marvkin@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <speakup at speech.braille.uwo.ca> Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2005 12:56 AM Subject: Speakup for linux info wanted Hi. will be taking a class in hardware stuff and to install operating systems at my college. so looking to install speakup for linux. could you tell me where i can get it from, how to install it, what software synths to download, how to use it, and how to configure it. please let me know. cheers Marvin. _______________________________________________ Speakup mailing list Speakup at braille.uwo.ca http://speech.braille.uwo.ca/mailman/listinfo/speakup
