Marvin -- i think it is better to use a hardware synth for speakup, as then you can hear more of the boot process, before the sound card driver gets loaded. Building speakup with the software synth makes the kernel bigger and your system slower, as the synth has to be compiled into the kernel along with speakup. If you can get an old doubletalk or even a more expensive dectalk or whatever, then you could even use it on other systems if you need to. But you need a synth that is able to plug into a serial port, not USB. I think the USB output is not yet supported. Go to the speakup page and you will find links to all the various linux versions -- binaries and source -- and you will also find links to synths that work with speakup.
