Hi Kirk, I found two libraries containing the glibc2 reference and installed them both (one was for c++ and the other for stdc++) but the problem did not go away. After doing apt-get install for the libraries, I blew away the speechd-up directory and started with a clean slate, but still the PIDPATH thing is missing. Seems to me you gave me some advice about this a year and half ago when I was first playing with software speech, but this time there must be something else I have left undone. If anything else occurs to you, I will be eager to try it. That's my current bottle neck.
