Ok, well if the system is that old it's very unlikely to have acpi, so you may want to have a look at your kernel config and re-compile with the correct apm options enabled - you need to be aware that stock kernels don't seem to enable apm and acpi, I think this is because they can make some systems crash that don't have them.
