If you use speech, then your accessibility is speech. Were it braille,
then that would be the drop in replacement, etc.

In any case, here's a suggestion on how to distinguish files from
directories (and other types of entries such as symbolic links):

alias ls='ls -px -1'

The -1 at the end gives you one entry per line. Take that off if you
don't care about that.

To learn more about what you can do with ls, and especially about how
you can customize it to taste, do:

man ls
