Initrd for Slackware

When considering a complete moduler approach to Speakup, I think about
attempting an initrd build for my Slackware environment. I looked at
some of the Slackware boot disks, some of which, contain an initrd
solution and I read the appropriate text files under the kernel source
tree and find myself rather confused.

I know, Redhat has a "mkinitrd" script or some such but I haven't seen
an equivalent for Slackware. What would the best way to go about
building an initrd with the least confusion? What I'm having trouble
with is just how much do I have to include in there and how much can
be deferred to full system boot.

Any ideas?
