I always use stock kernels just because they've been tested thoroughly. Distro kernels have a bunch of other patches in them you can't really count on them as much as kernels from kernel.org. One thing about 1.6: do not use a 2.4 .config with make oldconfig; you'll get bogus results with options you didn't select.
