Compiling kernel for the 1st time -- newbie questions

building it from source actually isn't as hard as you'd think. as long 
as you stay away from make config you're fine. so you'd do make  make 
menuconfig. this gives you  a menu with all configuration options and 
if you're using speakup cvs then the new cursoring improvements make 
it extremely easy to navigate.
