-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Ok. Besides installing the gnome stuff, you also did install the x series from the first cd too, right? Then, you did run xf86config to configure x for your system, right? As for the .xinitrc file in your home directory, I never did that, and things still work fine for me. But, I've seen others on here recommend doing that, so it can't hurt. While alt+f2 is the correct key combination to open the run dialogue, and while you claim you see gnome stuff at startup, how do you actually know your typing startx is launching gnome, and not kde? After you type startx, and your drive spins for a bit, you should hear a beep from your pc speaker, indicating that gnome is ready for you to login. If you don't hear the beep, then either you are not actually running gnome, or gnome isn't starting properly. Check if you have a file called /opt/kde/bin/kdm, and if you do, take away its execute permissions by doing chmod -x /opt/kde/bin/kdm . Now, you should be starting gnome for sure. Once you get the beep from gnome described above, login by typing your user name, followed by enter, followed by your password, followed by enter. If all goes well, your drive will spin for a bit. After it stops spinning, do the alt+f2 command, and type gnopernicus, followed by enter. You should hopefully now get speech. Hth.
