Yes, I discovered more on this subject early this morning.  I have a
script here in perl called ddclient.  It is used to update those
dynamic DNS's like dyndns.org.  But it has a query feature with a
command line option -query.  I discovered this morning one of the
means it used to find my current I/P was through a call to
checkip.dyndns.org.  Actually, I just now did a 'lynx
checkip.dyndns.org' and it brought up a very brief single screen with
the current I/P blareing in loud and clear.  The ddclient script uses
that to go and update your dynamic DNS's if you have that sort of
thing.
