/dev/cdrom, is usually a link to /dev/hda, /dev/hdb, etc.. What is the device ID of your hard drive, and how many hard drives do you have? The first IDE drive, on controller 0, (the primary), should be: /dev/hda. The secondary should be: /dev/hdb. The primary on the second controller (controller 1), should be: hdc. and so on. In fact, maybe you could send us a copy of /etc/fstab.
