using alsa-utils with builtin 2.6 alsa

Hi all.
Subject line says it all; I want to know how to get alsa-utils 1.0.4 to
work with the alsa in kernel 2.6.5, which I think is the same version or
similar.
It says it can't attach to some mixer called 'default', so no alsa
utilities, which I built from source, work.
Advice would be appriciated.
