Hi their.  What you want to do is edit the default runlevel ID to 3. 
That will give you a text login screen by default and won't start XDM or 
whatever graphical login you'd use.  Of course, if you have need for an X 
server after you login, you can either use xinit or StartX.  Whatever you 
like.  Its even possible to have multiple displays on an X server.  Say 
for example you wanted to play with Gnome-based applications and you 
wnated to use Freedombox?   This is possible, as I'm doing this very thing 
as we speak.  Hopefully this helps.
