I'd also emagine you need a relativly fast box if you are using stage 1 or 2 with all the software compiling. the box I am working with is a pII/233 with 72mb ram. Fortunately for me, I had a friend who helped me when I had the wrong CFLAGS set, among other problems, and caused the bootstrap to die while compiling glibc.
