Hi all!

Gentoo's 2004 release is scheduled for the 28th of Feb. The official x86 livecd will ship with a 2.4 kernel with speakup built into it. There will also be an smp kernel on that cd, how ever, it is a 2.6.3 kernel, and there appear to be a lot of problems with speakup and this kernel, so speakup will not be included in the 2.6 smp kernel.

Gentoo is trying to have quarterly releases of gentoo, though we seem to have gotten a bit of a late start on the releases this year. I don't have a release date for gentoo-2004.1 yet but from what I've been told, it's probably going to be soon, to try and keep on the release schedule from now on. We really hope to have a fully functional x86 livecd, including a working 2.6 kernel for the next release, but we will see how that ends up.

As a side note, we're still working on the possibility of getting speakup included on the livecds of other arches. Currently I don't have the hardware to test any of this, but if I'm lucky, I may have a sparc box and an amd64 box to test with this summer, so we will see how that goes as well. I might also be able to get my hands on a ppc box durring the school year after september to do some testing there to as well.

Thanks!

Deedra
