init/login problems

Yes, and no. Yes, all my users including root were able to login. No,
I didn't edit my inittab the way you described, since you're using
getty, and I'm using agetty, and you were also missing the term type
(linux) at the end of your line.

Nope, no /etc/ttytype on my system. Why don't you switch to agetty,
write your lines in inittab the way the one I showed is written, and
I'll bet all your login problems will magically go away?
