A technical question about Linux

Ok folks, I have somewhat of a technical natured question about Linux. I am a curious minded person, anxious to know how things
work. My question is, why is Linux so much faster than Windows or dos? IS it because it uses less system resources because it's
not focusing on putting everything in to windows on the screen? Is it because it requires less files to operate than Windows? What
is it?
