apache authentication against /etc/shadow

Hi all.

I've read the apache authentication howto, which describes the various methods that can be used to authenticate a user name/password pair with apache.

However, I would like to use apache to authenticate against /etc/shadow, and I didn't see a way to do this.

Does anybody know if this is possible, and if so, then what would I use as apache's authentication module?

BTW, I don't consider this to be a security risk, since the authentication would be done via https.
Thanks for any help in advance.

Greg
