fun with Debian fonts, or how I fubar'd

Well now thanks to an upgrade of Debian which doesn't set a default
screen font it seems that speakup w/o my ersatz patch is announcing what
I would expect. I suppose if you are using a different font it would
work, but there seems to be more going on behind the scenes than I
understand, so I will return to the woodwork and remind myself to
examine *everything* before "fixing" it. Sorry for the static.
