This is probably because you have OSS drivers as modules.

In order for alsa to work, you must build the kernel saying yes to sound,
but then no to everything else.  Then build alsa drivers, libs and utils
against those kernel sources.

Your modules then should be in the directory:

/lib/modules/kernel.version.number/kernel/sound

For example, my SB Live card, which is a pci card, has one of its modules
at:
/lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1.o

This is using version 0.9.0beta12 of alsa, so this may vary, but I thik
this is the location for the later versions of alsa, though I think the
path you gave sounds right for 0.5.12A which I think you said you were
using.
In addition, make sure that *all* of the oss modules are gone before you
try using the alsa driver modules.
